Chipped central incisor

Most of the time, parents are known for reminding or “scaring” their children that they only have one pair of eyes and one set of adult teeth.

This is the reason why we are often reminded to eat carrots and brush our teeth every single day.

It’s true that all of us only have one set of teeth, but with the wonders of modern dentistry, almost anything that goes awry can quickly and painlessly be fixed.

Whether it’s a loosened molar due to gum disease, the loss of a few teeth because of a facial injury, or chipped teeth, a skillful dentist can make that smile look even better than it originally did.

Teeth become damaged for different reasons. It may be because of a fall, after being hit in the face with a ball or even after biting down on something hard.

All of these things can cause chipped teeth. Not only does this become an aesthetic concern, but it also can pose serious dental health problems if the teeth are not fixed quickly and properly.

The best course of action after you realize you’ve indeed suffered a split or chipped tooth is to make an appointment with a dentist.

If the chip is small it can wait until the next day, however if it extends towards the gum and a large piece of the tooth has been removed, it’s important to contact the dentist as soon as possible.  Most cities have emergency dentists just for this reason.

Of course, the level of pain you experience – as a result of dentin or pulp tissue exposed – will also determine the urgency of a dental appointment.

Procedures for performing the repair differ depending on which tooth is involved and the extent of the damage.

For chipped teeth where only a small portion of the enamel has been effected, the dentist may decide on bonding.  This is a quick procedure and the results are amazing.

Some individuals are a bit fearful of the dentist and therefore don’t end up going until they are sporting a smile filled with chipped teeth.

In this case the dentist is likely to suggest a more complex approach to fixing the problem. It may include the use of veneers.

Although expensive this truly offers the most rewarding outcome as you’ll have the perfect smile.

Small children have a higher tendency of damaging their teeth during falls.

It seems a regular occurrence for a little one to lose their footing when they are playing at the playground or running with friends.

This same damage can happen during sports events as well. Even if children wear protective gear, they can still get chipped teeth.

For a child who still has their baby teeth it’s best to ask the dentist what he or she suggests in terms of treating the problem.  If it’s a small chip, they may decide to just grind the tooth down to make it even again and allow it to fall out on its own.

If it’s creating a more serious problem with the root of the tooth or the gum line, a more aggressive approach might be called for.

In summary, though chipped teeth are common, the normal process to repair them is also relatively easy.

Chips are different from cracks, as cracks often extend deep into the tooth structure.  Whereas chips tend to be small, self-limiting and normally involve only the enamel.

Chips are usually easy to repair and don’t normally threaten the life of the tooth.  Cracks, on the other hand, are often impossible to repair (even with a root canal) and often result in extraction of the tooth.

Invisalign appliances in place

Image via Wikipedia

Nowadays, many adults want to try out Invisalign, a relatively new product bringing drastic changes to modern orthodontics.

In contrast to old-fashioned metal, clear braces can straighten your teeth without you having to give up nice smiles.

This way of straightening your teeth works just as well, while not being so noticeable. People around you may not even notice you’re undergoing treatment.

One of the first things an Invisalign specialist will do is try and get accurate bite impressions of your mouth. The bite impressions taken will most likely be used to create virtual images of the teeth alignment changes that need to occur.

From these computer images, an Orthodontist can create a series of appliances designed to gradually put your teeth into proper alignment.  You must learn to be patient because each appliance has to be worn for about 2 weeks.  The succession of appliances works to slowly align teeth to their correct places.

Today, nearly Orthodontists offer their patients Invisalign. There are also several cosmetic dentists who are qualified to do this type of dental treatment.

If you want to find a doctor for invisible braces, ask family and friends who have undergone the procedure. Doing this may shorten the time it takes to find a good dentist or Orthodontist.  Don’t forget to ask your family dentist for a referral to a good Invisalign specialist.

Compared to traditional metal brackets, Invisalign braces take just about the same length of time to work.

However, in addition to the aesthetic appeal of Invisalign, other factors make it a better option for you. The appliances used for this method can be removed, which is in contrast with metal brackets that are attached to your teeth.

This means that there are no forbidden goodies like chewy candy, gum or chips. Consider too, that being able to remove the corrective tools means you can clean your teeth better.

Patients will be counseled to wear their braces 24 hours a day for best results, with the exception of eating and brushing time. A patient who wears the appliances as instructed will generally enjoy a shorter treatment time than those who don’t.

During the entire course of treatment, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to put on 20-30 corrective appliances. The total number of appliances created and used for the process determines costs in a big way.

Most wearers complain of tightness when the next appliance is put on. This discomfort is perfectly normal and is usually short lived.  It’s quite similar to having traditional braces tightened.  And, of course, the minor discomfort is easier to tolerate with mild pain meds and a clear vision of what the end result will be.

If you are interested in learning more about Invisalign, contact an Orthodontist or Cosmetic Dentist who is experienced in this procedure.

Straightening your teeth does NOT necessarily mean having metal braces…
