Orthodontics – Not Just For The Young
More adults than ever are jumping on the wagon for a perfect smile. Recent surveys have shown that nearly 25% of orthodontic patients are adults.
Adult teeth can be manipulated just like younger people’s teeth, so treatments are generally just as effective.
There are a lot of choices for adults when it comes to improving the look and function of their teeth. Gaps between teeth, crowding, protruding and poorly placed teeth can all be corrected.
And braces are easy to maintain, even with a busy adult schedule. The one area where adults typically find an inconvenience is in adjusting their schedule to make the regular, required visits to the orthodontist.
Business presentations, singing, playing instruments, eating out, kissing, and any sports activity can still be done when wearing orthodontic appliances.
The main benefit of adult braces involves one’s health. The health of your mouth and your overall health can be impacted by teeth that are crooked or have severe over and under bites.
These conditions create obstacles to a person’s regular and thorough teeth cleaning, increasing the risk for decay and disease, despite a disciplined oral hygiene regimen.
Decay, periodontal disease, and loss of teeth can be prevented when the teeth are properly straightened with orthodontics. The fact is, that almost anyone can find orthodontic care to be beneficial these days.
Most treatment periods do not last longer than 2 years. The teeth could be moved more quickly, but by doing so, a lot of resorption of the roots of the affected teeth can occur.
This means that when teeth are shifted too fast, the length of their roots are shortened as a result. And since the roots are the anchors that hold our teeth in the jaw, having shorter roots than normal can and probably will result in loose teeth in later years and very likely the loss of those teeth.
So, when undergoing orthodontic treatment, you must be patient. And you should also be prepared to endure some chronic, mild discomfort throughout the entire period.
Also, keep in mind that some misalignment problems cannot be corrected through orthodontics alone. In many cases, some oral surgery will also be needed.
This may involve removal of the first bicuspids, which is very common to make room for the other teeth. It normally also involves removal of the wisdom teeth, for the same reason. And in a growing number of cases, the jaws themselves must be surgically repositioned through a procedure called an osteotomy.
A beautiful smile is often cited as a major factor in attractiveness, and everyone wants the confidence that comes with a great smile. These results can last a lifetime and are well worth the time and discomfort involved.
If you have very young children, braces may be the last thing you think about. But in this modern age, that’s not a good approach. The assumption that children should already have their entire set of permanent teeth before receiving treatment is inaccurate.
For the most part, all permanent teeth except the wisdom teeth are in place by age 12. But orthodontic treatment can, and often should begin before then.
Not only is it easier to physically move the teeth in a younger person, but modern diagnostic techniques allow for more proactive treatment. This means that the teeth can be properly aligned as the jaw grows and even as the last adult teeth erupt into the mouth, rather than after the fact.
Because once jaw growth slows or stops, it takes longer to correct orthodontic issues. It is for this reason that it is suggested that all children should have an orthodontic screening before they turn eight.
Good oral health, self-confidence and a healthy self-image are all encouraged by strong, straight teeth. So, for a number of reasons, it’s best that you have your children evaluated for braces and if needed, start orthodontic procedures before they reach puberty.
As orthodontics gain in popularity, research continues into the relationship between the teeth, jaws and face of children. This determination can be of great help when it comes to treatment options that should start at an early age. You can also get peace of mind by getting your child to the orthodontist as quickly as possible.
Early treatment can also mean certain physical and emotional problems can be avoided at a later age. Crooked teeth or misaligned jaws in young children can bring more than just teasing and hurtful comments from other children. Misaligned teeth are more likely to get damaged, decayed or broken.
Braces not only can change a person’s physical health and appearance, but also their mental outlook.
Orthodontics will provide the patient will the most beautiful natural smile possible. Add any necessary cosmetic dentistry procedures to that and it’s possible for just about anyone to achieve the smile of a Hollywood star!
In closing, a great smile is more than just pleasing to the eye, it will make you feel better all over! And orthodontics just may be the path you take to get there.
