You have a toothache.  It suddenly becomes urgent to find out the cause of the problem in order to stop the pain.  Toothaches can be caused by a variety of conditions from head colds, to tooth decay, to extreme sensitivity to heat and cold.

Head colds and inner ear infections can contribute to a toothache.  Extreme pressure in the head filters down to the jaw line.  This is experienced as a toothache.  Sometimes, a toothache may be the first indication that a head cold or sinus problem is coming on.

Often, kids that do a lot of swimming during the summer inadvertently allow large amounts of water into their ear canals.  This water can remain in place, and lead to an ear infection.  It could also result in a toothache.  Prevent this common problem by requiring your children to wear ear plugs when they go in the water.

Once you think you have found the cause of your toothache, it is time to figure out the best means of treating it.  The most reasonable step is to call the dentist for an appointment.  The dentist can take a look at your teeth and gums and recommend the most suitable treatment.

You may want to ask the nurse for ways to alleviate pain until the dentist appointment.  The most common forms of over-the-counter remedies include mild pain relievers and numbing creams and gels.   Remember, these measures are no substitute for your dental appointment.  They are only temporary measures to help with pain relief. Sometimes they can recommend a home remedy for toothache until you see your dentist.

Help yourself with temporary relief by avoiding extremely cold or hot foods.  If you must drink cold liquid you should use a straw.  Also, it is a good idea to avoid chewy, solid foods, like meat, until your dentist has taken care of your tooth.
