Cosmetic dentistry helps many people get a confident smile, and also corrects many dental anomalies. Six of the most common cosmetic dental procedures are:

1. Dental bonding: This is carried out to fill gaps in the teeth and cover stains and chips. The process involves the application of a composite resin material to the tooth. The material, which is available in several shades, is sculpted to cover the desired area. It is then dried using a high-intensity light or a chemical. The process does not cause any discomfort to the patient except when a minor tooth roughening is done.

2. Tooth contouring and reshaping: This quick, inexpensive, and non-invasive procedure is used to fix dental issues such as overlaps, shallow pits and grooves in the enamel, worn edges, and chipped teeth. The dentist uses a polishing instrument for the removal of a tiny amount of enamel and the tooth is reformed. The enamel removal procedure is carried out only after dentists confirm through x-rays that the teeth requiring reshaping are strong enough to withstand some enamel loss.

3. Mouth guards and night guards: These are plastic appliances that offer protection to the mouth during sports and also while sleeping. Mouth guards disperse shock caused by violent contact and thus protect the head and neck. They are prepared using a cast of the teeth. The mouth guards can be stock, mouth-formed, or custom-made. Night guards prevent bruxing between teeth during sleep.

4. Halitosis or bad breath: The breakdown of food particles by the bacteria present under plaque, in the crevices on the tongue, and between teeth leads to the generation of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) that cause bad breath. Periodontal disease is also a cause of halitosis. Dentists determine the amount of VSC being generated by using a halimeter.

5. Tooth whitening: This treatment is useful for removing stains that appear due to the consumption to tea, coffee, cigarettes, and wine. Whitening is carried out using bleaching gel, which is usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. The gel breaks down releasing oxygen molecules that penetrate the enamel and dentin and disintegrate the stains.

6. Crowns and bridges: Teeth that need repair after an accident or excessive decay can be treated by using a crown, which is an artificial replacement for the upper portion of the tooth. A bridge involves placing an alternate tooth that is held in place using two crowns that are bonded on adjacent teeth.

PEMBROKE PINES, FL - JANUARY 12: New dentures ...

Dentures are a great solution for people who have lost some, or all, of their teeth to periodontal disease, tooth decay, or injury.

Another reason you may be looking for dentures is because your old set broke or were lost.

I’ve heard so many stories of people who have had a child or grandchild get a hold of their dentures, which have then “magically” disappeared.

Usually, the hardest part of getting dentures is the long wait between when you lose your teeth and when you get your new dentures.

If you are working, this time delay can cause problems for you.

A lot of denture-wearers feel embarrassed being seen by friends or family without teeth.

It’s not just the missing teeth affecting your appearance, without your teeth your facial muscles can sag and you just don’t look like yourself.

With same day dentures, you don’t need to worry about going weeks or months without your dentures.

The on-site lab creates your same day dentures in the same fashion typical dentures are created.

Most dentists send the impressions to an off-site lab and then wait until that lab creates your dentures. It can take weeks or sometimes even months to get proper fitting dentures because if a change is needed it has to be shipped back to the lab and then back to the dentist.

If you have a pair of dentures that fit fine, the time it takes to get a new pair of dentures isn’t an issue.

But usually, you’re not looking to get a new set of dentures when your old pair fits just fine.

Permanent same day dentures give you the ability to continue on with your daily life, and you don’t need to worry about the discomfort of temporary dentures.

Usually, a same day dentures dentist will have you come in for an early morning appointment to take impressions.

Once the impressions are created, the laboratory starts work on your dentures right away.

By the end of the day, you will have a pair of permanent same day dentures.

Dental Facts: 1919: One! Two! Three! Scrub!

Bacterial plaque, bad breath and dental problems are all directly linked.

The anaerobic bacteria that live in the mouth cause bad breath or halitosis, dental decay, periodontal disease and gingivitis.

Anaerobic means living in the absence of air.  These types of bacteria are mostly the ones that cause disease.

Some dental issue definitions are:

Bad breath – the odor produced by bacteria living off food particles, each other and dying tissue.  Bad breath can also be caused by other more serious health issues.  An example of this is diabetes that can cause acidosis which in turn causes bad breath.

Dental decay – caused by the acidic excrement from the bacteria. The tooth is literally being dissolved by chronically being bathed in this acid.

Gingivitis – the inflammation of the gums caused by your own body trying to fight off the invasion of the bacteria.

Periodontal disease – (perio = around, and dontal = tooth) the loss of bone and tissue attachment around the teeth. It is caused by a microbial invasion around the teeth by anaerobic bacteria.

Between the teeth, along the gum line and on the surface of the tongue is where the film of plaque grows best.

The odors and acids tend to accumulate in these areas.

Bad breath is caused by not being able to keep the population of bacteria under control.  In most cases, poor oral hygiene is the culprit.

Cleaning the teeth twice daily is the minimum requirement for reducing the population of bacteria.  However, meticulous cleaning is difficult.

Tooth brushing does not access in between teeth and often causes ridges and grooves along the gum line.

And oral irrigating does not cut through the sticky greasy barrier the plaque produces.

It is possible to use modern technology and techniques to quickly and easily perform a thorough oral cleaning, though.

Meaning, the best results will probably be achieved with an electric or ultrasonic toothbrush and either manual flossing or using a flossing device.

The key is to be able to access every surface of every tooth and then be able to remove the entire layer of plaque.

If one or more areas are chronically missed, disease will likely develop.

Often, bad breath is caused by infections from dental decay, gingivitis, or periodontal disease.

Once again, poor oral hygiene is the biggest reason for these infections.

Unknown to most people is the fact that improper flossing may take an infection from one part of the mouth and spread it to a healthy part.

The infections may also cause some gum tissue to die, which adds to the food feeding frenzy of the bacteria.

Bad breath from periodontal disease has a characteristic smell.  It’s the gasses from the disease process and dead tissue that you smell.

There are other factors that contribute to the bacteria and odor besides food and infection.

Smoking, mouth breathing, alcohol-based mouth washes and certain medications increase dry mouth.  Reduced saliva in the mouth does not allow your mouth to flush away the bacteria that cause the odor like it normally would.

In addition, the bad breath odor may be from sources other than the oral cavity.

Some medical conditions cause bad breath.

Infections in the lungs, nasal cavity or sinuses can cause odor that is associated with bad breath.  Bad breath in diabetics is a rather common occurrence.

Those with stomach acid conditions may have chronic, toxic-smelling breath.  And finally, less likely, but still possible, bad breath can be associated with certain conditions related to malfunctioning kidneys and some cancers.

Because bad breath is so repugnant to both the individual who has it as well as those they come in contact with, it is important to maintain a thorough oral hygiene regimen that includes cleaning the teeth at least twice, if not three times every day.

Deciding which home whitening kit to pick is really difficult when you have many options.

First, you may be wondering if they really work.

Well, some of them work, which is why you need to be careful when you are choosing the right kit for your teeth whitening needs.

While some kits promise you amazing results, they may not deliver.

Obviously, one of the key factors of whether a bleaching kit will work effectively is the condition of the teeth themselves.

In a dentist’s office, it is standard practice to clean the teeth first, before bleaching.  Maybe not a complete hand scaling, but at least a polishing with an abrasive paste.

So, the only way to accurately test how well a home teeth whitening kit works is to make sure the external surfaces of your teeth are as clean as possible first.

And when you’re ready, here are some essential tips you should consider if you want to make sure you make the right decision when buying a teeth whitening kit.

Check Out The Ingredients

First of all, if you want to find a kit that really works and gives you great results, you’ll want to take a look at the ingredients in the bleaching product itself.

One of the best ingredients to look for happens to be carbamide peroxide.  This is a special bleaching agent that works to whiten teeth safely and effectively.

The standard professional strength for carbamide peroxide is normally between 20 and 30% concentration.  So, look for products with a strength in that range and you’ll be on the right track.

There are other quality bleaching agents that you may encounter, like hydrogen peroxide.  Just make sure it’s a professional grade ingredient, or your results might suffer.

Ensure It’s Easy To Use

If you’re looking for the best home teeth whitening kits, it’s also a great idea to ensure the kit is easy and convenient for you to use.

The last thing you need is a kit that keeps you stuck hiding in the bathroom for several hours during use.

Some of the old trays and strips require that you keep the products on your teeth for some time.  They work fine, but normally require 20-30 minutes per session.

But you may prefer to go with a state-of-the-art whitening kit that will allow you to easily apply it and quickly get the job done.

Some home whitening kits now come with an ultraviolet light much like dentists use.  The light is not as high-intensity as a dentist uses, but it still works to speed up the chemical reaction between the bleaching agent and your teeth, which cuts the time of each session, as well as the number of sessions, way down.

Also, many of the newer systems come in pen style for easy application, even when you’re on the go.

Look For A Free Trial

It is also a good idea for you to find free trial when you need a teeth whitening kit.

You won’t want to spend a lot of money on something before you know that it works for you.

Through the trial, you can see if the product really works.  If it doesn’t, you can stop the trial.

And if it does work for you, then you can continue using the product for even better results.

No one wants to throw money down the drain, and a free trial helps you make a great decision without losing any money.

If you want one of the best home teeth whitening kits, make sure you keep these simple tips in mind.  They will definitely help you to make the right choice.

Chipped central incisor

Most of the time, parents are known for reminding or “scaring” their children that they only have one pair of eyes and one set of adult teeth.

This is the reason why we are often reminded to eat carrots and brush our teeth every single day.

It’s true that all of us only have one set of teeth, but with the wonders of modern dentistry, almost anything that goes awry can quickly and painlessly be fixed.

Whether it’s a loosened molar due to gum disease, the loss of a few teeth because of a facial injury, or chipped teeth, a skillful dentist can make that smile look even better than it originally did.

Teeth become damaged for different reasons. It may be because of a fall, after being hit in the face with a ball or even after biting down on something hard.

All of these things can cause chipped teeth. Not only does this become an aesthetic concern, but it also can pose serious dental health problems if the teeth are not fixed quickly and properly.

The best course of action after you realize you’ve indeed suffered a split or chipped tooth is to make an appointment with a dentist.

If the chip is small it can wait until the next day, however if it extends towards the gum and a large piece of the tooth has been removed, it’s important to contact the dentist as soon as possible.  Most cities have emergency dentists just for this reason.

Of course, the level of pain you experience – as a result of dentin or pulp tissue exposed – will also determine the urgency of a dental appointment.

Procedures for performing the repair differ depending on which tooth is involved and the extent of the damage.

For chipped teeth where only a small portion of the enamel has been effected, the dentist may decide on bonding.  This is a quick procedure and the results are amazing.

Some individuals are a bit fearful of the dentist and therefore don’t end up going until they are sporting a smile filled with chipped teeth.

In this case the dentist is likely to suggest a more complex approach to fixing the problem. It may include the use of veneers.

Although expensive this truly offers the most rewarding outcome as you’ll have the perfect smile.

Small children have a higher tendency of damaging their teeth during falls.

It seems a regular occurrence for a little one to lose their footing when they are playing at the playground or running with friends.

This same damage can happen during sports events as well. Even if children wear protective gear, they can still get chipped teeth.

For a child who still has their baby teeth it’s best to ask the dentist what he or she suggests in terms of treating the problem.  If it’s a small chip, they may decide to just grind the tooth down to make it even again and allow it to fall out on its own.

If it’s creating a more serious problem with the root of the tooth or the gum line, a more aggressive approach might be called for.

In summary, though chipped teeth are common, the normal process to repair them is also relatively easy.

Chips are different from cracks, as cracks often extend deep into the tooth structure.  Whereas chips tend to be small, self-limiting and normally involve only the enamel.

Chips are usually easy to repair and don’t normally threaten the life of the tooth.  Cracks, on the other hand, are often impossible to repair (even with a root canal) and often result in extraction of the tooth.
