Whitening our Choppers

Many different means to improve your teeth’s appearance are available today.

teeth whitening treatments can be done with the help of dentist and also at home with do-it-yourself kits.

However, both these options mean that you will be using chemicals to make your teeth whiter.

Most teeth bleaching solutions are safe to use but if the idea of putting chemicals on your teeth and in your mouth does not appeal to you then you can use natural teeth whitening methods.

Many of the regular dental hygiene habits that we practice or do not practice can lead to discoloration of the teeth.

For example, flossing can be a tedious process and many people skip this step before brushing their teeth.  But flossing is actually one of the simple natural teeth whitening methods you can use to keep your teeth looking white and shiny.

Flossing helps to get rid of plaque and when you have a buildup of plaque you will have a higher chance of tooth discoloration.

Get into the habit of flossing regularly, even when you go out to eat.   It’s also an excellent practice to vigorously rinse your mouth after eating to help dislodge the food trapped on or between the teeth.

Mouthwash is something many of us use but it might also be staining your teeth. Stop using your regular mouthwash and see if this makes any difference in the color of your teeth.

One natural teeth whitening remedy you can use to facilitate your natural teeth whitening is the fruit in your kitchen.

Some fruits are excellent choices in homemade natural teeth whitening recipes.

That’s because they contain mild acids and enzymes that both remove and bleach the stains on enamel.

One thing you can do is cut a strawberry in half and rub it on your teeth to benefit from natural teeth whitening.

Alternatively, you can make a pulp out of strawberries and brush the fruit onto your teeth.

Or, you could even use store-bought whitening trays to contain the pulp and keep it in contact with your teeth for an extended period of time.

But you probably don’t want to exceed 30 minutes per session, as the fruit’s acids may begin to de-glaze the enamel, and that’s not a good thing.

Another natural remedy for teeth whitening is to rub orange peel on your teeth. The inside of the orange peel when rubbed over your teeth can help to counter stains and discoloration.

Finally, you can make small changes to your diet to help keep your teeth white and clean.

Eliminating liquids like coffee, tea and soda can make a huge difference in the accumulation of stain and the appearance of your teeth.

While eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables will help keep your teeth clean.

Discard processed food from your diet and try to eat up to 75% of your diet raw.

Not only will your teeth be whiter, your overall health will improve, too.

Gum disease is an infection in your mouth, causing the gums and underlying bone to become unhealthy.

With this disease, if it continues to go unchecked, you might lose your teeth and you could also notice your overall health declining.

There are some people who are more apt to experience periodontal disease.  Possibly due to diabetes or Down syndrome.  Both of those medical conditions can affect a person’s mouth and cause them to be more susceptible to gingival disease easier than others.

Periodontal disease may even be hereditary in some cases. Children of parents who’ve always experienced problems will want to keep a close watch on their teeth.

People who smoke and use chewing tobacco are more apt to experience gum disease, too. The chemicals in the tobacco not only stain the teeth, but also irritate the gums, causing them to shrink, recede and just be generally unhealthy.  Not to mention the possibility of several cancers from using those products.

Eating a lot of sugar will certainly put you into the category of a person likely to have periodontal disease.  But it doesn’t necessarily guarantee it.

Really, it’s all about your oral hygiene.

That’s why it’s important to begin a good regimen of taking care of your teeth when you’re young.  When you get home and eat a snack after school, brush your teeth as soon as you’re done eating.  Or at least vigorously swish with warm water for a minute or two after eating or drinking anything with calories in it.

Today’s diet consists of mostly processed, carbohydrate-rich foods.  These are the perfect foods to facilitate cavity formation and gum disease.

Why?  Because they are easier for the bacteria in our mouths to consume and use in their activities.  And those activities consist mainly of eating and reproducing.

But, it’s all that activity that produces a whole lot of waste products, like a construction site does.

The waste products in this case are acids and other toxins that cause cavities, gum disease and other issues in a person’s mouth and even their entire body.

And all this takes places within a convenient, ever-forming matrix – plaque!

Right, all those bacteria do most of their damage if you allow plaque to form and remain on your teeth or gums for some period of time.

In fact, within 24-72 hours, unattended plaque will begin to gradually harden, using the minerals in your saliva, into tartar.

It is this tartar that causes the most damage.  Because it still “houses” colonies of harmful bacteria, while being chemically bonded to your teeth.

Plus, it must be mechanically removed, usually with a dental hand instrument by a professional…

Which is why a habit of brushing or swishing after each meal, snack or drink with calories in it is one of the best ways you can keep plaque and tartar formation – and bacterial development – to the minimum.

And eating raw food over pre-processed foods also plays a major role in minimizing plaque development.  Since the bacteria need the plaque as a matrix to grow and thrive in, they can’t affect any damage if there is no plaque, right?

Therefore, it naturally follows that the more raw foods a person eats, the less plaque and fewer disease causing bacteria will be found in their mouths.

And the fewer bacteria of that type, the less chance of any disease process setting in.

Three toothbrushes

Good oral hygiene ensures healthy teeth and an appealing smile.

We’re not all born with Hollywood smiles, but we all have a duty to maintain our mouths fresh and our teeth clean.

The health and cleanliness of your teeth are what is truly important.  It really doesn’t matter if you have spaces between your teeth, uneven incisors or canines that are a little off.

Clean, stain-free teeth can turn any smile into a starry smile.

Our focus tends to shift from a person’s eyes to their mouth when we are talking with them up close. Our brains are just wired that way.

This explains why, when someone has something stuck in between their teeth or noticeable plaque build-up, we will notice it right away.

Even worse than plaque, the end result of poor dental hygiene is embarrassing bad breath, which is caused by the bacteria in the mouth that also produce damaging acid.

Just remember, Brushing, Flossing and Gum Care are the three fundamentals to a healthy smile.

You need to take care of your teeth and to do that, you may need to use sophisticated tools such as Philips Sonicare Toothbrush.

Let’s revisit the 3 basics of healthy teeth.

Brushing

When you are getting out of bed and into bed, remember to brush your teeth.

All it takes is 2 to 2 1/2 minutes per brushing routine.  It is crucial not to apply too much pressure on the toothbrush, as aggressive brushing damages the enamel.

Circular motions during brushing are not as good as vertical movements. Brushing in a circular motion will lead to irritation of the gums because the bristles are brushing against the gum line instead of away from it.

For example, the proper way to brush the lower teeth is to start from below the gum line and the brush stroke should go from bottom to top.

And of course, it’s just the opposite for the upper teeth (starting from above the gum line with a downward motion).

And while you’re at it, don’t forget your tongue, the roof of your mouth and your cheeks.  Because they all accumulate plaque that can lead to odor and oral disease.

Flossing

Flossing is an extremely important part of oral hygiene.  Regular flossing protects your mouth against decay and odor-causing bacteria. It is important to floss before bedtime and after meals.  Regular floss can be difficult to guide through very closely-spaced teeth.  Try waxed floss for more painless cleaning.

If you have limited dexterity and can only use one hand for the flossing process, chose floss that comes with a rechargeable holder stick.

Gum Care

Learn how to identify unhealthy gums. Timely action can help you avoid painful gum infections. Often, what starts off as unhealthy gums, develops into gingivitis.

Neglect your gums for too long and you may be inviting larger dental problems like periodontitis.

Fortunately, if you are regularly brushing and flossing properly, there is little chance that you would have problems with your gums.

That’s because both brushing and flossing helps to not only remove plaque and food debris, but also to massage and stimulate your gum tissue.

You should immediately make an appointment with your dentist if your gums are swollen, oozing blood or your teeth appear to be loosened in their sockets.

Of course, instead of having to manage serious dental issues after they occur, it much smarter and easier to simply prevent them to begin with.

Furthermore, you can avoid the (literal) headache of cavities and the related dental bills by maintaining good oral hygiene.

Give your teeth the importance they deserve.  And strive to follow the basic three rules of oral healthcare every day.

Dental Laser Simplifies Drilling – Dental Laser

The days of the dreaded dental drill might soon be over. A laser that treats tooth decay, using a painless beam of light, is about to make its way onto the dentistry scene. The laser will enable dentists to use less, or even no anesthetics when performing procedures – and it can even trim gums and sterilize infections without the necessity of Novocain.

The new laser will speed up most dental procedures. Tariq Idris, one of the first dentists to use the laser in the UK, explains that “lasers have been used in some areas of dentistry for a few years but they haven’t been fast enough to replace the drill. This has changed all that. Now a laser can be used to remove tooth decay and prepare cavities and crowns.”

According to Mail Online Health, the laser is very gentle, and no anesthetics are needed for most procedures. The light is shined on the effected tooth and a spray of water passes into in to the mouth, but there is absolutely no grinding or harsh contact with teeth. The laser can also easily disinfect problem teeth, as the laser reportedly killed 99.7% of all bacteria in an article published by the American Dental Association.

The laser works by releasing high speed, pulsing beans of light. Different frequency models will have different effects, as some will burn through tissues, while others will be used exclusively to kill bacteria within the mouth. “You can use the laser to prepare a cavity and then clean a patient’s gums,” says Idris, who believes that laser treatments will cost just about 15% more than today’s standard dental procedures. He went on to say that the laser also “offers the first permanent cure for sensitive teeth, by “sealing” the layer of exposed dentine that is the cause of tooth sensitivity.”

Dental implants and root canal treatments are the two main areas where patients will benefit, Idris believes. In explaining this, he states that “in root-canal work, dentists need to drill into the root and insert an antibiotic dressing for several weeks before filling it. With laser treatment you can cut the cavity, disinfect the root and fill it in a single session.” This inevitably will make root canal procedures much faster, less uncomfortable, and more efficient with regards to results. The laser can even benefit patients looking for dental implants – which typically must be prepared a year in advance. Using the new laser technology, implant procedures can be completed in about a day’s time – from removing the tooth, o drilling the bone, and ultimately installing the tooth implant.

Though the laser has many uses and applications, it will not replace the drill completely. It cannot yet remove old fillings, and with a very hefty price tag, it will likely be some time before the laser technology is available in most dental practices.

A Patient Wearing Invisalign

Image via Wikipedia

A confident smile certainly improves anyone’s appearance.

However, problems with the teeth’s structure such as overcrowding, underbite, overbite and wide gaps in-between can more often than not interfere not only with one’s regular activities, but one’s confidence as well.

Correcting the problem can be as easy as wearing traditional metal braces.  However, not everyone can withstand the pain associated with wearing metal braces.

The good thing is that there are options to remedy this routine orthodontic problem.

The most common of which, and by far the most popular dental technology being used nowadays, is the Invisalign system.

The Invisalign system is a series of clear plastic aligners worn for about two weeks at a time.  Each set is replaced by the next set of aligners in the series until the desired position of the teeth is achieved. Generally, the treatment plan takes somewhere around a year, depending on the patient.

Your dentist will determine the time line for your Invisalign treatment plan.

What are the advantages of Invisalign aligners?

  • Invisalign aligners are practically invisible.  They are composed of thermoplastic material similar to teeth whitening trays.
  • Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. You have the option of taking them off when you’re eating, drinking or about to brush your teeth.
  • Since there are no metal brackets needed to straighten the misaligned teeth, you don’t have to worry about mouth sores or irritation arising from the metal wires of the braces.
  • Shorter time spent whenever you visit your dentist because Invisalign treatment doesn’t involve adjusting metal brackets, changing elastics, etc.
  • It allows you to view your virtual results before you start on the treatment plan. So you can see how your teeth will look like after the treatment is complete.

Invisalign works like metal braces – it moves the teeth slowly and gradually through appropriate placement and controlled force.

The only difference is that Invisalign controls the timing of the force application.

How does this happen?  Each stage focuses on moving only certain teeth.  For example, on week one only two teeth are orthodontically moved.  The next series of aligners is intended for the scheduled movement of the other teeth, and so on.

At present, there over one million patients who have been treated with Invisalign technology.

The number of patients who opt for clear plastic aligners continue to grow each year.  If you want to learn more about Invisalign as an alternative to metal braces or if you want to know if Invisalign will work for you, consult with your local dentist or orthodontist for more information.
