Smallest Loupe Light
Image via Wikipedia

Just imagine if we lived in a world where surgical loupes or the dental microscope had not yet been invented.

Would you like to have a surgeon or a dentist operate on you without the benefit of these items?

Microscopes are essential to diagnosing abnormalities. The difference between the levels of treatment received is influenced by the ability of the doctor to see.

Exploring a few ways these items are used to enable doctors and dentists to perform the surgeries and treatments needed will help you to understand the importance of magnification in medicine.

Surgical loupes have been proven time and again to be able to assist those in the medical as well as dental fields beyond all measure.

If they did not have the loupes then there would be so many different things that they would be unable to see.

Microsurgery is among the more delicate surgeries that use these small instruments, and it certainly wouldn’t be a possibility if the technology required to magnify an area just did not exist. The surgery is normally used for eye and ear surgery, as well as reattaching severed limbs.

Magnification abilities will cause either the complete success, or the utter failure of a medical procedure which calls for it. Surgical Loupes have the ability to magnify an entire area, and are used a lot for cosmetic dentistry, along with movable dental microscopes. There’s a flip-up type of microscope which allows a dentist to alter those levels of magnification at will, and won’t have any trouble doing so.

The devices known as surgical loupes have been around since the sixties.  However, they’ve been upgraded quite a bit since that time, and the magnification levels have increased as well.

Dental microscopes can be used by an endodontist (root canal specialist) to see the inside of a tooth and the sensitive tissue within. These things would be invisible to even the most skilled dentist without the proper tools.

Illumination and magnification is also needed for doctors that practice in the treatment of ear nose and throat conditions. Microscopes they use have a straight head instead of an angled one. The focal lens on these is completely unlike the normal microscopes, and the part can be switched out along with the lens. This is the method used to change the magnification level.

Among the advantages of such microscopes is the capability to manipulate the levels of focus utilizing your foot. With a tiltable main head, a doctor has the ability to rotate that head up to 180 degrees. A binocular head will supply much needed magnification, and there are many add-ons that can be purchased for the microscope that enhance it’s overall use.

Other types of surgical loupes or microscopes are used by ophthalmologists. They are necessary for surgeries that correct problems of the eyes.  They’re also used for lasik surgery, which is becoming more popular with those who need corrective intervention to improve their sight.

As you can now see (pun intended), magnification is very important in the medical and dental fields.  The proper combination of magnification, illumination and access is what enables earlier diagnoses, better treatment and better outcomes in healthcare – across the board.

There’s no counting the number of lives that have been saved, and physical function that has been preserved or even recovered, as a result of micro-technology.  And surgical loupes and microscopes have been on the forefront of these humanitarian advancements since day one.

Dental braces, with a powerchain, removed afte...

Our smiles can be a real pain in the behind.

I’ve always found it bizarre how many individuals are born with twisted, crooked, impacted, and lopsided teeth.

What happens here?

Every other part of our bodies seem to fall neatly into place.  But so many individuals end up needing braces.  I am certainly now grateful that I wasn’t one of them.

But both of my daughters require braces for their teeth.   At least if they want them to look straight by the time they’re teenagers.

So, what happens with all those individuals who weren’t able to get braces as children?  I know – they acquire braces as adults!  Hey, it’s not at all uncommon nowadays.

Undoubtedly, you encounter braces on adults off and on. Naturally it would be a little more awkward getting braces at that age, but it’s never too late to get them.

If you’re a 45 year old mother and never had the opportunity to get braces, but now you can afford them, go ahead and check into braces for adults.

It’s not only about the metal tracks and head-gear any more. You can now enjoy a set of clear adult braces. This will make your braces much less obvious.

People probably won’t even spot your braces.  After maybe two years, those braces for adults will be removed and you’ll be smiling pretty.

Ever heard of Invisiline?

They are the in-thing right now!  Teenagers and adults alike are taking full advantage of these new-age braces.

Basically, they resemble a clear, compact mouthguard that slides over the teeth.  Once they’re in, it’s really hard to spot them.

Of course, they come out when you eat or brush, but otherwise they stay on your teeth like braces.  Your dentist can tell you if you’re a likely candidate.

So, you may be one who chooses to get braces for adults, but no one said you couldn’t do it in style.

Patients with disabilities require special attention when undergoing dental procedures.

These patients are hard to restrain and have difficulties remaining still for extended periods, especially in the case of complex dental surgery.

The treating dentist puts the patient in a deep state of relaxation or complete sleep by administering sedation medication or general anesthesia.

Sedation and sleep dentistry offers a better dental solution to patients with disabilities.

Patients with physical and developmental disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Parkinson’s and those who have behavior problems may require the expertise of a certified sleep dentist.

Their situation demands special care and attention different from the regular dental procedures performed on non-special needs patients.

How does sedation and sleep dentistry work?

First and foremost, the treating dentist will review the needs of the patient.

After identifying the needs of the patient only then a treatment plan will be prepared.

The levels of sedation varies with each case. Some patients easily doze off to a relaxed state while the others require more sedative medication before they can achieve the desired level of complete relaxation.

In other cases such as patients with severe mental disabilities, it is important to put them completely to sleep.

During surgery, the sedation may be administered through a combination of breathing mask and medication.

Laughing gas or nitrous oxide will gradually put them in a relaxed state. The patient’s treatment plan determines whether oral or intravenous medication is appropriate. These are administered in graduated levels until such time complete relaxation is achieved.

In the past, these procedures are performed in the hospital where proper facilities are available. Now, developments in dental art technology allow patients to have the surgery right at their dentist’s office.

These dentists have secured specialized training and have permits in the administration of anesthesia from the state they operate in.

Not all dentists are licensed to perform sedation and sleep dentistry.  Do not forget to check the dentist’s qualification and experience before committing to a dental procedure.

Why do my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?

This is a question that needs to be answered.

It is also a vary common question among people of varying ages, genders, lifestyles, etc.

Likely, at one time or another, almost every single one of us have seen traces of pink when we brush our teeth. You should not try to pass this off as something minor. Your oral health depends on taking this problem seriously.

Ozone generators can often prove to be helpful by creating an oxygenated mouthwash that might just kill the germs that cause gum disease and even bad breath.

Many things can cause your gums to bleed when you brush your teeth.

Sometimes, it can be blamed on sensitive gums. You may be brushing your teeth too hard. The bristles on your tooth brush might be too rough or too firm. You may even spend too much time brushing your teeth.

Any of these things might be the cause of bleeding gums. No matter what, though, you should talk to your dentist to see if any of these causes are the case.

This is vital, because bleeding gums can be a sign of periodontal disease, otherwise known more simply as gum disease. In general, gingivitis may be the underlying cause behind bleeding gums. The good news is that it is possible to reverse the effects of gingivitis.

One of the devices that might be useful for fighting this type of problem is a ozone generator.  Such devices can produce oxygenated water that can be used as a mouthwash.

However, if gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to more serious forms of disease. For instance, it could turn into periodontal disease. That can make your teeth start to become loose and they can eventually even start to fall out.

A good oral irrigator is another useful tool.  They provide much benefit, but in a different way than the ozone generators mentioned previously.

Other, even more serious problems can cause your gums to bleed when you brush. It might be a sign of a blood disorder, even cancer based disorders like leukemia. Clotting problems may be the underlying issue as well.

On a less serious note, sometimes people are sensitive or even allergic to things like aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and things of that nature.

These supplements and OTC medications can sometimes act as blood thinners, which could explain the problem. You will never know unless you talk to your dental professional though.

It has long been suspected that smoking and gum disease are interrelated. Thanks to recent studies, that link has finally been proven. We have all long known that smoking is dangerous to your health. It can cause heart disease, including heart attacks. It may lead to strokes and aneurysm. Naturally it might lead to lung and throat cancer, not to mention many others. Your breath smells, your teeth get stained, and respiratory problems and infections are practically a given. As it turns out, smoking can negatively affect your oral health as well.

Smoking is one of the main risk factors associated with gingivitis. This because smoking practically opens wide the door for bacteria to flock into your mouth. Bacteria is what ultimately causes gingival diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. However, that is not the only reason smoking can lead to gum disease.

Both the smoke which comes from the tobacco and the nicotine in cigarettes can make your blood vessels constrict. That makes it harder for nutrients and oxygen to get to parts of your body – including your gums and gum tissue.

Smoking is not the only thing which causes this to happen. Chewing tobacco can as well. Further, they can both make it more difficult for your body to adequately fight off infections. Meaning, it cannot repel the infection which causes gingivitis. If you are a smoker, it may even be more difficult for your body to respond to the proper treatment methods for gm disease.

How can you, as a smoker, decrease your risk for gum disease? Well, naturally, you have got to stop smoking. Think of all the aspects of your health smoking will negatively affect? You also need to do your part by rigorously taking care of your teeth. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are absolutely necessary.
